TESTIMONIAL

Chris Newman

Producer of Games of Thrones
1st Assistant Director Band of Brothers

“I have known Pat since 2000 when we worked together on Band of Brothers. Since then I have had need of his calm organisational skill and understanding of how to get the most from untrained actors and supporting artists in any scenario, not just military recreation.

Taking that responsibility away from the on set crew, being mindful of safety and engendering a feeling of being involved in a worth while endeavour brings the results you want on screen.”

What I do

MILITARY ADVISOR FOR FILM & TELEVISION

I work with directors, actors, stunt teams and supporting artists to create credible military movement, behaviour and screen realism. From small specialist units to large-scale formations, my role is to help establish disciplined, era-appropriate performance that serves the story, camera and production.

Where required, my work extends across departments, collaborating with weapons, costume and production teams to support accurate handling, equipment, terminology and military dialogue, maintaining consistency and realism throughout the production.

This work is built on prior military service with the Parachute Regiment and professional film and television experience dating back to Band of Brothers in 2000.

LARGE FORMATIONS AND BACKGROUND ACTION

Coordinating and training groups of supporting artists to move, react and hold formation with military discipline and screen credibility. Working alongside stunt teams, ADs and directors, training focuses on rhythm, spacing, timing, command response, battlefield behaviour and controlled movement in depth. Acting as the military command-and-control link on set, I help translate direction from the AD department into clear, disciplined movement for large groups — making large-scale action feel organised, authentic and visually powerful.

MOUNTED AND ANIMAL AWARE ACTION

Liaising with horse masters and stunt riders to support mounted action for screen.

My focus is on the military activity around the horses — gradually building noise, movement and battlefield atmosphere in controlled stages to help acclimatise them safely. This includes preparing ground soldiers and supporting artists, creating safe lanes and columns, managing spacing and command response, and helping scenes feel battle-ready for camera while remaining practical, disciplined and safe.

Experience also includes working around camels and elephants in period and military settings, with the same focus on awareness, spacing, discipline and safety.

SCRIPT, PROTOCOLS & MILITARY DETAIL

Advising on the military detail that supports believable performance and production design. This can include reviewing scenes, action beats, terminology, rank structure, commands, protocols, equipment use and military behaviour to ensure the world of the story feels credible.

Whether working from the script, during rehearsals or on set, the focus is on giving directors, performers and departments clear, practical guidance that supports realism, continuity and the needs of the production.
